What to expect as a network engineer at IMC
Technology is at the heart of everything we do at IMC. Our innovative proprietary software makes millions of trading decisions every day. IMC’s global network infrastructure is the foundation of our technological excellence, keeping us connected to markets and exchanges around the world and enabling us to execute trades at lightning speed. But behind every trade, behind every technological breakthrough, are our people. This includes our talented team of engineers. Here we take a look at our network engineers and their key role at IMC.

What does a senior network engineer do at IMC?

IMC’s network engineers play the vital role of keeping our global network infrastructure stable – whatever the market conditions. Holistic thinkers, they understand how all the pieces of the network fit together and use that expert knowledge to keep our systems running smoothly.

It’s a fast-paced working environment where no two problems – or days – are the same, especially during periods of high volatility. But our network engineers are born problem solvers who know exactly what it takes to keep us connected to our global markets and exchanges.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. IMC’s network engineers also work closely with our trading and execution teams to optimize our proprietary trading infrastructure and give us an edge over the competition. For example, whenever we want to add capacity, our network engineers start planning that well in advance, paving the way for our continued expansion with a proactive, can-do attitude.

Because big-picture thinking is so important in this role, our network engineers have a strong understanding of trading fundamentals, coding, and automation. This solid grounding allows them to thrive in IMC’s multidisciplinary teams – where smart, talented IMCers pool their knowledge to deliver high-impact solutions.

In these dynamic teams, good ideas are implemented fast: if you come up with a solution to a problem, there’s a good chance it can be put into production within 24 hours.

What are the key protocols and technologies used by IMC network engineers?

To maintain, support, and enhance our global network infrastructure, our network engineers need to have a broad range of technological capabilities at their fingertips. This means having in-depth knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, Unicast, and Multicast routing, and experience in operating low-latency networks.

At the same time, our network engineers are well versed in protocols such as OSPF, BGP, PIM SM, QoS, and NAT. In terms of coding, we expect our network support engineers to contribute scripts and codes to our automation efforts using Python, Ansible, or Bash.

But understanding and implementing these technologies across our network is only part of the story. A senior network engineer must also be able to communicate technical concepts and challenges clearly and effectively to a wide range of internal stakeholders – from IMC’s trading desks to software and hardware engineers.

A network engineer’s typical career path

The beauty of network engineering at IMC is its flexibility. There’s no set career path, and no rigid hierarchy either. Of course, there are many different routes network engineers can take – such as working in trading landscapes, WiFi technologies, or low-latency trading, for example. But there’s plenty of freedom to move between projects along the way.

Those with an interest in management are encouraged to pursue opportunities to become People Leaders – a broad-ranging remit that can mean anything from mentoring new hires to managing a team of direct reports. In other cases, IMC’s network engineers prefer to add value by focusing on more complex, longer-running projects as Individual Contributors.

Whichever route our network engineers choose, they can expect a highly competitive salary, options for hybrid working, as well as an open, inclusive company culture built around collaboration and extensive knowledge sharing.

Want to help us build next-generation trading infrastructure?

At IMC, we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of trading technology – and our network engineers are the foundation of all that progress. Their curiosity, relentless focus on accuracy, and creative approach to problem solving unlock the potential of everything we do. In an industry where speed is everything, they keep us ahead of the curve.
